Village SOS Programme
The Big Lottery Fund has teamed up with the BBC to launch the new £3m Village SOS Programme which seeks to support enterprising ideas in six UK villages. Successful applicants will receive grants between £100,000-£400,000 to create a brand new venture that will bring new life and energy to their village. The programme will fund organisations with a specific idea for an enterprise. This might be linked to land or a building that is owned or rented or which the
applicant wishes to buy. It can also fund a new event (such as a music or food festival) to be held for the first time.
The deadline for bids is 14 August 2009. Those with a business proposal for rural villages with fewer than 3,000 residents are invited to apply. All types of voluntary and community organisations such as charities, social enterprises, local festival committees, are eligible. The Big Lottery Fund aims to make three awards in England and one each in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The journey of the six successful villages and their Village Champions will be filmed for a BBC One television series in winter 2010.

Call for Visual Artists
Rideout invites UK visual artists to submit expressions of interest for The Truth About..., a touring visual arts exhibition planned for 2009/10
The Truth About.. will provide professional visual artists with an opportunity to concentrate on producing new works that imaginatively address the themes of crime and justice in the UK. Artists will be expected to collaborate with other artists as well as work individually. The artists will be expected as part of the commission to spend a period of time leading an ideas/development session with prisoners within a UK prison.
Production support is offered for the whole production process from the first idea until the finished piece. The fee and the amount of the production budget will be negotiated with the selected artists according to the specific circumstances of their production proposal. The project is subject to further successful funding applications.
Rideout is looking for artists who can demonstrate an imaginative and original approach to the themes of crime and punishment which communicates effectively with the general public. The resulting work will tour widely within the UK to both formal and non-formal exhibition spaces.
Expressions of interest (rather than specific proposals) can be sent to Rideout either at admin@rideout.org.uk or to The Roslyn Works, Uttoxeter Road, Stoke-on-Trent, ST3 1PQ. Supporting material, such as a c.v, letters of reference, articles, publications, etc. can be included with the application.
