Canterbury Art Fair returns for third year

More than 100 artists and craftspeople will display their work this autumn as the University for the Creative Arts hosts the third Canterbury Art Fair.

The event will run at UCA Canterbury from 6 - 24 October and will feature more than 400 items ranging from traditional paintings to jewellery through to furniture. All of the work will be for sale with prices starting at just £50.

Curator Ben Kidger said: We want to show people that if they are looking for something beautiful to decorate their home, they needn't simply head to the nearest department store.

For the same price they could end up buying something that is unique rather than mass produced, and have the knowledge that they are supporting an emerging artist."

We have a diverse range of exhibitors this year including recent graduates, and also people who practice as artists while maintaining another profession. For example one of the exhibitors is a dentist who paints her patients with their mouths open.

The fair aims to strengthen Canterbury's reputation as a cultural destination by bringing innovative, contemporary work to the city. All those taking part have gone through a rigorous selection procedure to ensure that only exciting, high quality work is exhibited.

Last year saw over 2,000 visitors enjoy the show which is supported by Barwick Construction, the University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury City Council and Kent County Council.

Would you like to host a performance in your own home?

Threshold is a short season of intimate performances in domestic settings and will consist of four shows over two weekends in November / December in Ashford, Canterbury, Folkestone and Margate.

We are looking for someone willing to make their home a stage and host the show in this area. Please note, the address of the host location is only given to the audience members after they have bought their ticket so is not widely advertised.

In Canterbury, the show will be by the well renown artist, Chris Goode, with one other performer and will be presented on the weekend of 13th and 14th December.

There will be an audience of about twelve people for one performances each day at about 3pm. The performers will need to get in the day before for a rehearsal. For more information contact info@threshold.org.uk or call Cathy on 0796 201 2822.

Dealing with Writing

Weekend workshops by the sea

Royal Hotel, Deal, Kent.

These courses are for all writers who wish to develop their playwriting skills. They are also recommended to workshop leaders and tutors who wish to expand their methodologies.

Next workshop:

Plays Personal, plays political.

Workshop leaders:

Noel Greig and Philip Osment

A great play can connect our personal lives, thoughts and experiences to the wider world: the local and particular becomes the universal, the personal becomes political.

This weekend course will explore how we can achieve this in our own work, through a mixture of practical exercises, reference to existing plays and tutor-led discussion. The work will cover such topics as subject-matter and theme, style and genre, and the development of story and character. By the end of the weekend you will have begun to develop an idea for you own new play.

Saturday October 25th 11.15- 18.30

Sunday October 26th 10.00- 18.00

Tuition fee £175
